Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the server.properties file go?
In the root folder of your Minecraft server, next to the server JAR. Stop the server, replace the file (or paste the contents into it), then start the server again. On most game panels you can edit it from the file manager.
What is the best view-distance for a small server?
10 is the vanilla default. Dropping to 8 reduces CPU and RAM use noticeably on busy servers, and it is the easiest performance win. Simulation distance (how far mobs and crops tick) can be lowered separately.
Should I set online-mode to false?
Only if you run behind a proxy such as Velocity or BungeeCord that handles authentication. Setting it to false on a public server lets anyone join with any username, including yours, so keep it true otherwise.
Does this work for Paper, Purpur, Fabric and Forge?
Yes. They all read the same vanilla server.properties file. Paper and Purpur add extra settings in their own config files, which this tool does not generate.
How much RAM does my server need?
It depends on software, players, view distance and mods. Use our Minecraft RAM calculator to get a recommendation and JVM flags.
